Wood Group’s global contributions to education advance local communities

A student at Los Andes University pays close attention to a presentation given by his instructor. He is part of Wood Group Colombia’s 15-week course called Reliability Engineering, in which 36 undergraduate student engineers learn maintenance and optimization skills.

For Wood Group it is extremely important to develop local capabilities in countries in which it operates by investing in both education and the future sustainability of the industry.

These are just a few examples of its many efforts:

Perth, Australia

Wood Group’s pipeline and subsea specialist, J P Kenny (JPK) has recruited 30 graduates from local universities in the last two years. The graduates are benefiting from the international expertise of senior engineers and JPK’s global knowledge network. JPK has also formed a partnership with the University of Western Australia, where it provides support for the offshore pipeline design course.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Over the next five years Wood Group will provide scholarships to engineering students at Heriot-Watt University’s Dubai campus. Two students were awarded 22,000 AED (approximately US$6,000) for the third and fourth years of their degree. Both are in the top 10 percent for academic excellence in their engineering degree courses. Wood Group will also provide internships for the students.

Almaty, Kazakhstan and Newfoundland, Canada

A new generation of engineers will benefit from two academic chairs recently established at universities in Kazakhstan and Newfoundland. Wood Group has committed £120,000 over seven years to sponsor a chair and engineering graduates’ award program at the Kazakh-British Technical University in Almaty.

In Canada, C$500,000 is being invested to sponsor the Wood Group Chair in Arctic & Cold Region Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN). Wood Group companies IMV and J P Kenny already collaborate with MUN on the Co-Operative Engineering Programme, in which engineering undergraduates combine academic terms with extensive industrial internships in the oil & gas industry.

Bogota, Colombia

In an effort to identify and develop young talent in Colombia, Wood Group Colombia developed an alliance with Bogota’s Los Andes University, one of Latin America’s top academic institutions. A team of five employees developed a 15-week course called Reliability Engineering, in which 36 undergraduate student engineers learned basic maintenance and optimization skills necessary to increase productivity.

Aberdeen, UK

In conjunction with Talisman, Wood Group launched a five-year scholarship program to support the career development of engineering students at Robert Gordon University. Scholarship recipients also will receive mentoring support and placement opportunities to engage in practical engineering challenges.

Austin, Texas, US

A display of wellhead equipment at the University of Texas’s Cockrell School of Engineering is Wood Group’s latest investment in education. Wood Group Pressure Control donated three surface wellheads for permanent display outside the Chemical and Petroleum Engineering Building. The display is intended to interest students in the oil & gas industry, and will be used as a training tool when discussing wellhead technology.

WellheadDisplay

The new wellhead display at the University of Texas includes three Wood Group surface wellheads with production trees: a conventional wellhead (far right) and two speedhead systems. The speedhead systems are designed to accelerate installation and enhance safety; requiring approximately 17 hours less to install than the conventional wellhead.
