A clear focus on HSE best practices

Frontline Focus

Les Thomas

Les Thomas, group director responsible for HSE, addresses more than 250 Wood Group managers during the 2008 HSE conference in Houston, Texas.

In January, Wood Group introduced Frontline Focus, a health, safety and environment (HSE) initiative that is part of our commitment to continuous improvement across the Group in 2009.

Its purpose is to take management time spent at recent HSE Regional Conferences and refocus it on activity at the frontline of our operations. As a result, approximately 500 people will commit to additional HSE contributions over and above what they normally do to help make a positive difference to our overall HSE performance.

"We have a solid suite of HSE programs and processes in place that have progressively delivered significant performance improvement over the last five years. Further improvement does not require new programs, but it does require better execution of the basics," said Les Thomas, group director responsible for HSE.

Frontline Focus is not just a safety initiative but can be applied to issues of health and environment; it is primarily about refocusing management time, energy and effort to where it can really make a difference. Management interventions should:

  • credibly contribute towards our vision for HSE excellence,
  • support the 2009 Group HSE Plan,
  • be visible to our workforce and clients,
  • complement the activities of our HSE professionals.

Many of our companies are already very good at promoting HSE awareness campaigns and developing a positive safety culture with their people; Frontline Focus will help spread these best practices to all corners of Wood Group.

Success will be measured via evidence of more effective participation and intervention by management at the frontline of our operations. We know that if we do the right things then our performance will improve. We will centrally collate the evidence and the Group Board Executive will review and assess what has been achieved.

We will also recognize the best efforts being undertaken across the Group, with appropriate publicity given to highlight best practice and reward the people involved. These will be evaluated at the end of the year and Chairman's HSE Awards will be presented to the most effective initiatives in each division, in each region.

In launching the initiative Group Chief Executive Allister Langlands said "Your personal efforts over the last few years have made Wood Group a safer and higher quality workplace and your continued leadership, in particular your connection with our people at the frontline, will help us continue that progress so that together we can celebrate success."
